Dirty Frag and cPanel Security Advisory

We wanted to let clients know that cPanel has released a routine security update addressing several newly disclosed vulnerabilities affecting cPanel & WHM servers.

Our team has already reviewed and applied the necessary updates to managed services as part of our normal maintenance and security procedures.

Clients managing their own VPS or dedicated servers with cPanel/WHM should run the following command as soon as possible to ensure their systems are fully updated:

/scripts/upcp

In addition, we recommend all Linux VPS clients apply the currently recommended mitigation steps related to the recently disclosed “Dirty Frag” Linux kernel vulnerability:

sudo sh -c "printf 'install esp4 /bin/false\ninstall esp6 /bin/false\ninstall rxrpc /bin/false\n' > /etc/modprobe.d/dirtyfrag.conf; rmmod esp4 esp6 rxrpc 2>/dev/null; true"
sudo sh -c "echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches"

At this time, no additional action is required for managed hosting clients.

cPanel Vulnerability - Patch Available for install

This is a critical advisory for clients who are running cPanel on their Virtual Private Server(s).

You are recommended to update your cPanel installation as soon as possible as a vulnerability has been disclosed that can allow an attacker to exploit and authenticate to the server.

You can update by logging into your VPS via SSH or Console in the client area and running the following command:

# sudo /scripts/upcp  (You can also click on the version number in WHM and update through the web interface.)

It is recommended to perform the update using screen incase your connection gets interrupted during the update process.

COVID Response

For the last month Canhost enacted our BCP (Business Continuity Plan) this has provisioned seamlessly. All staff is available and working remote. Data Center access as always is escort only and requires scheduling.
